Does skin breakout or purge when starting a new product?

Yes, this can happen and is a normal part of your skin adjusting to active botanical ingredients.

Our Longevity Balm contains bakuchiol, a plant based retinol alternative that has been shown in published research to support skin cell renewal and turnover. When bakuchiol is introduced, it can accelerate your skin's natural renewal cycle, bringing hidden congestion to the surface as temporary breakouts or small bumps. This is known as purging.

Our core facial products including the Original Face Balm, Tallow Balm, Facial Elixir, and Eye Balm are formulated with rosehip oil and carrot seed oil. Both contain vitamin A precursors that gently support skin renewal over time. In some skin types, particularly those with existing congestion, this can also trigger a mild purging response.

Purging usually appears in areas you already tend to break out, looks like your usual type of congestion, and improves within two to six weeks as your skin adjusts. If it feels too intense, dropping back to every second day can help your skin settle.

Does your product contain natural retinol?

Our products do not contain retinol (synthetic or otherwise). Instead, they are formulated with natural vitamin A–supportive oils that provide gentle skin-renewing benefits without the irritation often associated with retinoids.

We use carefully selected plant oils that are naturally rich in vitamin A precursors, including:

  1. Rosehip oil, which contains trans-retinoic acid precursors and provitamin A compounds
  2. Carrot seed oil, which is rich in beta-carotene — a form of provitamin A that the skin can convert into vitamin A as needed

These ingredients help support skin renewal, collagen health, and overall skin resilience in a retinol-free, skin-friendly way. While they offer antioxidant and regenerative benefits, they do not function in the same way as retinol, making them a gentler option for sensitive or reactive skin.

Our formulations are designed to work in harmony with the skin, helping to:

  1. Encourage healthy skin renewal
  2. Support collagen and elasticity
  3. Strengthen the skin barrier
  4. Reduce inflammation and oxidative stress

We believe in full transparency and choose ingredients that nourish and support the skin naturally — without synthetic actives or harsh retinoids.

What’s the difference between an allergy and a skin purge when starting new skincare?

Understanding the difference helps you know when to persist and when to stop.

A purge happens when active botanical ingredients support your skin's natural renewal cycle, bringing hidden congestion to the surface. With the Longevity Balm, bakuchiol actively supports cell turnover which can trigger this process. With our core range, rosehip oil and carrot seed oil provide gentle vitamin A precursor support that may cause a milder purging response in some skin types.

Purging typically appears in areas you already break out, resembles your usual congestion, and resolves within two to six weeks.

An allergic reaction or sensitivity is your skin telling you a specific ingredient is not right for you. This looks and feels very different.

Signs of a reaction include redness, itching, burning, or rash-like patches appearing in new areas where you do not normally break out, worsening with continued use, and not resolving over time.

If you experience sharp stinging, hives, or swelling, stop using the product immediately.

At Liminal Elixirs our formulas use carefully chosen botanical ingredients, but every skin type is unique and listening to your skin is always the best guide. We always recommend starting with a sample to test on your skin before purchasing a full size.

Are your products non comedogenic?

Our formulations are designed with skin balance in mind and sit low on the comedogenic scale overall. Our core oils including castor oil, rosehip, jojoba, and carrot seed oil are all considered low comedogenic and well tolerated by most skin types, including those prone to congestion.

The Original Face Balm, Eye Balm, and Longevity Balm contain organic beeswax and mango butter which sit at a comedogenic rating of two, meaning they are generally well tolerated but worth patch testing if your skin is particularly prone to congestion.

Our Tallow Balm is made with grass-fed beef tallow, which is not formally classified as non-comedogenic. That said, tallow is structurally very similar to the skin's own sebum, and many of our customers with congestion prone skin find it actually helps balance their skin over time. As with any new product, patch testing first is always recommended.

As with all skincare, individual skin responses vary and we always recommend starting with a sample before committing to a full size.

Does your product help with enlarged pores?

Carrot seed oil is a natural vitamin a and is also a wonderful skin toning and tightening agent. It can be used to minimise large pores and tighten up sagging skin.

Enlarged pores can be present due to a few different factors- genetics being one of them. Also when our skin is over producing oil it can sit in our pores and this is not the kind of oil we want as it’s clogging. Our product is non comedogenic and over time should balance your skin's oil production.

However like anything it’s not one size fits all.

Are your products pregnancy and breastfeeding safe?

Our products are made from the finest natural botanical ingredients. However we recommend always checking with your doctor or midwife before using any products containing essential oils.

What is the difference between the Longevity Balm and the Original Face Balm?

These two products serve different purposes and work beautifully together.

The Original Face Balm is your everyday all-over nourisher. It’s a rich, barrier-supportive balm designed for the whole face, deeply hydrating and protective. It’s formulated to prevent transdermal water loss, keeping skin nourished, supple, and resilient day and night.

The Longevity Balm is a targeted treatment. Formulated with bakuchiol — nature’s retinol alternative — and sea buckthorn, it’s designed to be applied to specific areas that need extra attention, such as fine lines, the neck, or areas experiencing texture or pigmentation changes. It sits under the Original Face Balm, applied first to clean skin so its active ingredients can work directly.

Should I use the Longevity Balm or the Original Balm?

If you’re looking for one product to start with, the Original Face Balm is the perfect introduction to Liminal. If you’re ready to add a targeted treatment layer, the Longevity Balm is your next step.

Many of our customers use both — Longevity Balm first on targeted areas, followed by the Original Face Balm all over the top.

Can I use the Longevity Balm and the Original Balm together?

Yes — and we’d encourage it. Apply the Longevity Balm first to any areas needing extra support, then layer the Original Face Balm over the top. The combination gives you both targeted renewal and all-over nourishment in one simple routine.

What about scent, colour and texture variation?

All of our products have a deep earthy scent. If you are sensitive to scent, we highly recommend purchasing a sample first to ensure the product is right for you.

Colour and texture variations in the Elixirs are completely normal and may occur due to seasonal changes & growing conditions. We are always ensuring we source the best quality ingredients and therefore they may change from time to time.

It does not affect the efficiency or quality of our Elixir in any way.

Why does my balm look uneven or irregular on top?

Our balms are 100% handmade and hand-poured by real people, not machines. Because of this, slight variations in texture or appearance are completely normal—and a sign of a truly artisanal product.

We use organic, natural ingredients that can naturally react to:

  1. Temperature changes
  2. Seasonal ingredient variations
  3. Cooling and settling after pouring

As the balm sets, some ingredients may settle or cool at different rates, which can create a slightly uneven or textured surface. This does not affect the quality, safety, or effectiveness of the product in any way.

Think of it like homemade chocolate or candle wax—no two batches are ever exactly the same, and that uniqueness is part of the beauty.

How long do your products last?

Because we use only natural organic ingredients and no synthetic preservatives, our products have a shelf life of approximately 6 months from the date of purchase.

Our balms are made fresh in small batches and are typically produced within the month of your purchase, so you can be confident you're receiving a product at its freshest.

To get the most out of your products we recommend storing them in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Our elixirs last approximately 6 to 8 weeks with twice daily use, and our balms typically last 6 to 12 weeks depending on frequency of use.

The absence of preservatives is intentional. We believe in keeping our formulations as clean and as close to nature as possible, and this is reflected in every ingredient choice we make.

Are your products vegan?

Most of our products are vegan, however we do have a few exceptions. Our Original Face Balm, Eye Balm, and Longevity Balm contain organic beeswax, and our Tallow Balm is made with grass-fed, pasture-raised beef tallow sourced from ethical WA producers.

Our Facial Elixir, Sensitive Facial Elixir, Body Elixir, Scalp Oil, Cleanser, Rose Hydrosol Spray, and Avocado Zinc are all completely vegan friendly.

If you have any questions about specific ingredients, feel free to reach out and we will help you find the right product for you.

Why hasn't my international order updated with local tracking?

Once your order leaves Australia, Australia Post hands your parcel over to your local postal service for final delivery. From this point, tracking updates will appear on your local postal service's website rather than Australia Post.

It is the customer's responsibility to monitor tracking through their local postal service and to follow up directly with them if needed.

If you are unsure which carrier has your parcel, the tracking number provided at dispatch can usually be entered on your local postal service's website for updates.
